Background:
Built in 1956, the school was extended in 1968 and consists of 14 classrooms, a library, an assembly hall/gym, kitchen and dining hall plus one mobile classroom. Over-subscribed for five of the past six years; the first criterion for admission is proximity to the school. The intake is drawn from a full range of social classes. The school has an excellent sporting tradition: its football and athletics teams were 1999 district champions; Steve Lomas, captain of West Ham and Northern Ireland, is a former pupil. A full-time specialist music teacher oversees a 40-member orchestra and school choir. The school also has an excellent fundraising record; in September 1999 it raised #2,639 for the NSPCC.
